Elbow Pain? Let’s Get to the Bottom of It

At our office, we believe every joint matters—especially the elbow! Whether you’re lifting groceries, typing at your desk, swinging a tennis racket, or hugging a loved one, your elbow is working behind the scenes to make it happen. If pain in this joint is limiting your lifestyle, we’re here to help you understand why—and what we can do about it.

What Exactly Does the Elbow Do?

The elbow joint is a hinge-type joint made up of three bones: the humerus (upper arm bone), the radius, and the ulna (the two forearm bones). It allows for two key movements: flexion and extension (bending and straightening) and rotation of the forearm (like turning a doorknob or using a screwdriver). Surrounding the joint are powerful muscles, tendons, and ligaments that work together to provide strength, stability, and control.

Your elbow is designed to handle a wide range of motion—but when that system is compromised, pain and dysfunction can quickly follow.

How Do Elbow Injuries Happen?

Elbow pain can come from acute injuries—like a fall, sudden impact, or overuse from an intense activity—or from chronic wear and tear caused by repetitive motions over time. Think tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, or even strain from poor posture and work ergonomics.

In acute cases, you might feel sudden sharp pain, swelling, or limited range of motion. In chronic cases, the discomfort tends to come on more gradually and may feel dull, achy, or stiff—often worse with use and better with rest. Both types of injuries need proper evaluation to heal properly and avoid becoming long-term problems.

Ice or Heat? When and Why

The right approach to ice and heat can make a world of difference.

  • For acute elbow injuries (such as a sudden strain or sprain), ice is your best friend in the first 24–72 hours. It helps reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain. Apply for 15–20 minutes at a time with a protective barrier like a towel.

  • For chronic elbow issues, heat therapy can be beneficial. It helps relax tight muscles, increases blood flow, and promotes healing in tissues that may have become tight or fibrotic over time. Again, 15–20 minutes is ideal, and always avoid placing heat directly on swollen or inflamed areas.

Knowing when to apply each makes a big difference in your recovery journey!

How a Chiropractor Evaluates and Treats Elbow Pain

When you come in for care, we begin with a thorough evaluation. This includes:

  • Reviewing your medical history and how the pain started

  • Observing the movement of your elbow and surrounding joints

  • Performing orthopedic and neurological tests to assess muscle strength, ligament stability, joint function, and more

We’re trained to determine whether the source of pain is muscular (like a strained flexor or extensor) or ligamentous (like a sprained ulnar collateral ligament). From there, we can apply targeted techniques such as soft tissue work, joint mobilization, and functional rehab to reduce inflammation and restore balance.

One of our key goals is to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. When we release a tight muscle or activate a weak one, we send signals to the brain that help retrain the body, improve joint mechanics, and reduce future risk of reinjury.
